About the Teachers' Pension Scheme
The Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS) is the occupational pension scheme for teachers in England and Wales, covering qualified teachers in state-maintained schools, further education colleges, and many independent schools.
McCloud Complexity: The 2015 reforms created significant complexity, with many teachers eligible for protection requiring careful analysis of which calculation method — final salary or career average — provides the better benefit.
Current Scheme Key Features (2015 CARE):
- Career Average (CARE) — Pension builds at 1/57th of pensionable pay annually
- Normal Pension Age — State Pension Age (currently 67)
- Early Retirement — Available from age 55 with actuarial reduction
- McCloud Protection — Enhanced benefits may apply for service 2015–2022
- Death Benefits — Survivor pensions and death grants
- Phased Retirement — Options to reduce hours while drawing some pension
